Total power collapse at Norochcholai

All three units of Lakvijaya coal power plant in Norochcholai were out of commission yesterday, CEB officials confirmed.
One of the units had been shut down for a planned maintenance, they said. A second suffered a “minor” technical malfunction while the third tripped yesterday. As a result, all 900 megawatts of electricity provided to the national grid by Lakvijaya were not available.

CEB officials said the shortfall was being met by other sources, particularly hydropower. The recent rains had left the hydropower reservoirs brimming. As a result, hydropower had accounted for a major portion of the country’s electricity requirement during the past two weeks, they said.

According to CEB statistics, on Friday 70.14 percent of the electricity was hydro; 10.79 percent was thermal; and just 18.59 percent was from coal. The Lakvijaya plant experienced several breakdowns after its commissioning but has been functioning well in recent months.
