Trade unions representing private sector employees and estate workers have planned to go for a joint protest against the government’s proposal to implement proposed labour law reforms as stated in Budget 2016.Free Trade Zone and General Services Employees’ Union Convener and General Secretary Anton Marcus told the Business Times that they would be launching a day of protest on December 19 requesting the government to withdraw the labour law reforms proposed through the budget.

As a precursor to the day of protest FTZ workers would hold a protest demonstration outside the Katunayaka FTZ from 6.00am – 8.00am on the same issue.He noted that in addition they would also be protesting against the merger of the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) and the Employer’s Trust Fund (ETF) and handing over of management of the Free Trade Zones (FTZs) to the private sector.Mr. Marcus pointed out that in this regard they would be submitting a letter to Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe on Friday (SD)
