The Deputy Inspector General’s office in Galle is investigating a Senior Superintendent of Police for allegedly harassing two businessmen by making them walk on their knees.

The complaint about the harassment was made to DIG Galle, S.D.A.S. Gunewardene, by two businessmen from Hikkaduwa. The two businessmen had gone to a restaurant in Arachchikande, Hikkaduwa, to complain about the food they had bought from there, as a child had fallen sick after consuming it.

The proprietor had lodged a complaint with the Hikkaduwa Police, stating he had been assaulted by the two businessmen, and admitted himself to hospital.

The Hikkaduwa Police had asked the two businessmen to be present at the police on September 16 for an inquiry. Though they had presented themselves, the complainant had not arrived and they were ordered to come on the following day.

On their return the next day, the two businessmen had been driven to the Galle SSP’s office.

They claim that the SSP addressed them in indecent language and made them kneel. Afterwards one of the defendants had been made to walk on his knees with the other businessman on his shoulders.

The SSP denied the allegations, saying that he merely got both parties to his office and strongly warned the two businessman.
However, the DIG has ordered a full inquiry into the incident.
