Tourism Minister John Amaratunga says that the authorities need to commission the Mattala airport to accommodate charters bringing in tourists. In addition, he pointed out in an interview with the Business Times that Mattala will only be used as temporary space for paddy stocks and that “sooner or later Mattala will be up and running.”

He noted that though the airport was not situated in the most ideal location it certainly would be put to best use and that it could also provide space for landing aircraft when the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) is full. (Sunimalee)
