Aarambhaya, is a page on Facebook which managed to score a thousand likes in under a week of its existence. A project aimed at raising a whopping Rs. three million in aid of the differently abled currently in the care of the Ragama National Hospital, the page is the handiwork of 22 interns.

Every year a fresh challenge awaits each batch of interns in the programme set up by Dialog, MAS, Deutsche Bank and 3M. This year’s mission is to put up a state of the art facility for the children who are currently cared for at the Ragama premises, under the purview of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya. It comes in response to the fact that while the healthcare sector in Sri Lanka is of a comparatively high standard in the region, mental health has areas where the need for improvement is dire.

The name Aarambhaya resonated well with the work the brief set out for this team. Almost identically pronounced to connote a new beginning in Tamil and Sinhalese, their efforts have not been limited to calling for donations via social media. Getting to know the children they will be helping, it isn’t just a project for the 22 amateurs who are racing the clock to get their show on the road. Aarambhaya Live In Concert is to feature musical greats like Sunil Perera, Misty, Corrine, Natasha and duo act Tehan and Shameen this evening, in aid of the cause.

Music isn’t the only special feature the evening promises. Deciding to use the art work the children created, merchandise with empowering slogans are also on offer at this evening’s event. This is in the hope that as much as raising financial aid to update the facility, the team can spread the word on much of what they have learned of the children themselves. Down syndrome and Autism are conditions that require special attention they feel, and an inclusive society will be a significantly stronger one.

If your Sunday evening could use some cheer for a good cause, the interns invite you to head over to the Musaeus College Auditorium at 7 p.m. on August 2. Tickets are priced at Rs. 4000, 3000, 2000,1500 and 1000. For more information call 0777341979.
