The Women’s Chamber of Industry and Commerce held its Members Day recently in Colombo which was an eventful day for the ladies of the chamber as the much awaited WCIC website was to be re launched. The theme for this event was “Developing entrepreneurial skills as a means of bettering living standards’.

Guest speaker for the occasion was Arjuna Herath, President Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka who spoke on how the role of a woman has changed significantly compared to how it was in the past. He referred to women who are leaders of many organizations and institutions and cited Janet Yellen Chairman of the US Federal Reserve, Indra Nooyi, Chair and Chief executive of PepsiCo and many more as examples.

He also identified the main hindrances for females to start up and operate their own business are, access to financial resources, inadequate training and access to information, lack of societal support, legal barriers and many more. In order for women to lead businesses and become successful these hindrances must be changed.

The website was officially launched by Ms Rifa Mustapha, Chairperson WCIC.
