Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau (SLTPB) together with the industry would be participating for the first time at a travel trade fair and promotion in Australia since numbers from this market have been picking up over the years, an industry spokesman said.

Sri Lanka Inbound Tour Operators Association (SLAITO) President Mahen Kariyawasam told the Business Times said on Thursday that the promotion in Australia was taking place for the first time and this would be an opportunity to tap on this new and growing market.

The Australian promotion would kick off this week on July 14 in Melbourne targeting mainly the Sri Lankans now resident there and others from that country, it was noted.

He said the roadshow would provide an opportunity for travel agents to attract the third generation Sri Lankans resident who would have not travelled to the country to come back home.

The industry would be making a presentation to around 50 Australian travel agents and later participating at the trade fair.

About 20 companies would be joining the delegation to participate at the Travel Industry Exhibition in Sydney later, including Destination Management Companies (DMCs) and hotels.

There had been a growth of 6.8 per cent last year in the number of visitors from Australia from 54,252 to 57,940 and ranks in the 8th position among the top 10 markets after Russia and France.
