The Central Bank recently issued for circulation a new currency note of Rs.5000. It is being introduced by the new government in view of the shift in demand for high denomination currency notes coupled with changes in price levels and increase in per capita GDP in the country in recent times.
The signatures of new Minister of Finance Ravi Karunanayake in Sinhala , and Governor of the Central Bank Arjuna Mahendran in English appear on the obverse of the note.

A Signature in English of a Central Bank Governor appears on a local currency note after over 26 years. An English signature of the then Governor Dr. Neville Karunatilake was on currency notes issued in 1988.
