Sea claims mother, 3 children relaxing on the beach

A mother and her three children drowned at sea off Tangalle yesterday, police said.
Police quoted eyewitnesses as saying that the family was relaxing on the beach when they were swept into the sea by a large wave.

Bodies of the mother and two children have been recovered while the search continues for the third child, police said.
The victims, Fathima Sithara, 33, Mohamed Ziyad, 10, Fathima Dikra 6 and Ziky, 2, were residents of Hulftsdorf, Colombo, police said.
The family had travelled to Tangalle to attend a wedding of a relative and were taking a break on Pigeon Beach when the incident took place, police said.

The father of the children who witnessed the tragedy had attempted without success to rescue his family, and is currently under medical treatment for respiratory ailments, police said. – LB
