The imposition of a casino entry levy of US$100 in the next few months is unlikely to reduce the number of high spending visitors frequenting Colombo casinos, industry sources said.

These casinos are yet to charge the entry levy, announced in the past budget, as the gazette notification was issued only on March 30. The bill now has to be submitted to parliament. Their operations will not be affected with this extra cost to patrons of casinos, a casino owner revealed. According to the amendment to the Betting and Gaming Levy, “Every person who carried on the business of gaming in Sri Lanka for any year commencing on or after January 1, 2015, shall collect a levy of US$100 or its equivalent in any other convertible foreign currency or in Sri Lanka currency from any person who enters such place of business of gaming.”

A senior official of the Inland Revenue Department told the Business Times that the department will be devising a manual system soon to recover this casino entry levy.
