The original members of the Super Golden Chimes have a busy schedule during their 2015 tour – they have already rocked audiences in Sydney and Melbourne in February. Now they have a concert at the BMICH on April 10 and then they fly to Dubai for another concert on April 17. Later in the year they plan to go to UK, and tour the US and Canada next year.

The Super Golden Chimes with the legendary Clarence Wijewardena and vocalist AnnesleyMalawana was a band with a difference that made a name with their original hit songs of the 70s. Every weekend would see a show at Navarangahala followed by a dance. Clarence Wijewardena, one of the best composers who changed Lankan pop forever, recorded hundreds of his compositions with the band. Their fans equate the band to the “Beatles” and Clarence was known as the local John Lennon or Paul McCartney!

The “Super Concert” series was a tremendous success, much appreciated by their fans who appreciated originals. Though the band with Clarence and Annesley had won many awards for their Sinhalese originals, they never failed to surprise the audiences with the English hits of the day from Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” to songs from Jesus Christ Super Star and the Bee Gees.

The 2015 concert tour saw the band led by Annesley Malawana take Sydney and Melbourne audiences through a nostalgic experience with the greatest hits of Clarence Wijewardena. Both halls filled to capacity, the Super Golden Chimes entertained the audiences with all their favourite hits – Udarata Niliya, Kataragama, Vana Bambaro, Paasal Kaale, GamenLiyumak…etc, taking the audience to their teenage days and even getting them to join in and sing along.

The band disbanded in the late 70s and some members still live overseas making a reunion concert quite a challenge. But when they do get together, they prove that they still have the same fire they had on stage 40 years ago. The evergreen melodic voice of Annesley Malawana, the guitar tone created by guitarist Dixon Gunaratne, a novel Sinhala acapella arrangement by composer Rukshan Perera, fabulous harmonies by all members, and funny stories of the band by Annesley, made their Aussie tour a success! They are joined by Nimal Perera, the dynamic drummer/singer who had a #1 hit song in Europe, Chandral Fonseka, current band leader of “Kings”, Paul Pereira, a well-known solo pianist, and Sunil Malawana, a musician turned successful businessman.

Their last reunion concert in Colombo was a decade ago, and they came up with something new – Sinhalese acapellas. On April 10 fans can look forward to another surprise creation!

Tickets are available at Torana (Liberty Plaza), and Video International in Nawala. For more information call 777744950.
