Additional Solicitor General takes oaths as President’s Counsel

Additional Solicitor General Yasantha Kodagoda took oaths last week as President’s Counsel in recognition of his professional distinction at the Bar. This appointment was made by President Maithripala Sirisena.

An old boy of Ananda College, Colombo, he completed his legal education at the Sri Lanka Law College and his Masters Degree (LL.M.) in Public International Law with Merit from the University College London, UK.

He joined the Attorney General’s Department as a State Counsel in February 1989 and later obtained a Postgraduate Diploma in Forensic Medicine and Sciences from the University of Colombo.

He was made Senior State Counsel in 1999 and Deputy Solicitor General in 2005. He was a member of the Government of Sri Lanka’s delegation to the United Nations Human Rights Commission and the Human Rights Council and has also served as Legal Advisor to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Insurance Board of Sri Lanka (IBSL).

He presently handles criminal appeals in the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court while functioning as a Visiting Lecturer cum Examiner at the Kotalawela Defence University
