Skipper Jayanga, Hasitha shine in drawn game
Prince of Wales’ skipper Jayanga Peiris and Hasitha Lanka shone in the 65th Battle of the Golds big match encounter against traditional rivals St. Sebastian’s which ended in a draw at De Zoysa Stadium in Moratuwa yesterday.
The pair cracked centuries and was also associated in a record fourth wicket stand 173 runs which in fact was the highlight of the match.
Jayanga cracked 102 while Hasitha slammed 110 inclusive of 15 boundaries and two sixes helping the Cambrians, resuming on their overnight score of 208 for 3, to make 262 for 7 and declare.
The 173-run partnership between Jayanga and Hasitha was a new series record which stood at 93 achieved by Indrajith Mendis and Priyalal Rodrigo set in 1983.
Unfortunately only 28.2 overs of play was possible on the second day as inclement weather forced the umpires to call off the game with St. Sebastian’s having faced 12.2 overs making a score of 33 for 1. – MSA
