A key suspect behind a drug ring that targeted students in and around the Dematagoda area, was arrested and 75 kg of tobacco and 100 packets of a narcotic substance also recovered from the suspect, police said.

The packeted narcotic substance turned out to be locally grown cannabis mixed with grated arecanut and shredded tobacco, and was being sold to students.

The police were tipped off on the suspect by a school principal who had found a letter inside the police complaint box situated inside the premises.

The police complaint box is meant for complaints from students on anti social activities and other related issues in their respective neighbourhoods.
The suspect is alleged to have been involved in the trade for a considerable period of time, before he was picked up by undercover sleuths of the Narcotics Division of the Dematagoda Police.
