A documentary film to mark centenary of WWI

To mark the Centenary of the First World War (1914-18) which ended with the Armistice on November 11, ‘Apocalypse: World War One’, a series of documentary movies retracing the history of the Great War in five episodes will be screened on November 8 and 9 at the National Film Corporation, Bauddhaloka Mawatha, Colombo 07. The conference and film will take place in Kandy on November 9 and 15 and thereafter in Matara on November 11.

In Colombo the conference will be illustrated with speeches by two panellists and will be held at 4 pm on Saturday, Novmebr 8, and episodes 1 and 2 (104 minutes) will be screened. Episodes 3, 4 and 5 (156 minutes) will be shown at 4. 00 pm on Sunday, November 9. In Kandy at the Alliance Française de Kandy, 642 Peradeniya Mawatha, a talk by Dr Amaury Lorin will be held at 4:00 pm on November 9 and screening of the 5 films on November 15. In Matara at Ruhuna University, a speech by Dr Amaury Lorin will be delivered at 2:00 pm on Tuesday November 11 the with screening of film 1.

This Franco-Canadian television series by Isabelle Clarke and Daniel Costelle brings together well-known and unpublished periodical documents and chronicles the major events, based on images of restored and colorized archives (5 x 52’).

The film screening will be held following a conference during which French historian and journalist Dr Amaury Lorin and Prof. Dr K. M. de Silva, Professor of History of Sri Lanka and Director, International Centre for Ethnic Studies will address on ‘Colonial troops in World War One: Global context, British Raj and Sri Lanka, 1914-18’

A Member of the Asian Society and a former Research Fellow at the French School of Asian Studies, Dr. Amaury Lorin has worked for twenty years in Asia, where he has made multiple long-term stays (China, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Indonesia, Myanmar).

Emeritus professor, University of Peradeniya, Foundation Professor of History of Sri Lanka, University of Ceylon, Professor Dr K. M. de Silva is an acclaimed Sri Lankan Historian and Author of numerous Books, Monographs and Articles. He was also the former Vice-President for South Asia of the International Association of Historians of Asia.
