A 43-year-old man who had defrauded several businessmen in Colombo by buying goods from them at wholesale prices but paying with cheques that bounced, has been arrested by the Wellawatta Police, along with three others.

The man who had a store house in Narahenpita used to purchase goods wholesale at amounts ranging from Rs. 500,000 to Rs. 700, 000 and pay by cheque. The goods he purchased included items such as dry rations, electrical goods and hardware.
The first police complaint against him was reported in February this year when he had purchased wheat flour valued at around Rs. 500, 000. Later, in August, he had bought tinned salmon worth Rs. 450,000 and paid by cheque. All the cheques had bounced.
Police had tracked down the man using one of the contact numbers he had given businessmen. He was produced in the Colombo Magistrate’s Court and remanded till September 16.

Investigations have revealed that the confidence trickster has seven complaints lodged against him at the Fraud Bureau and several other complaints at the Narahenpita, Kohuwela and Mirihana Police stations on various cases of defrauding.
Wellawatta OIC IP Ranjith Kumburegama is leading the investigation.
