Associated Motorways (Pvt) Ltd (AMW) is to implement several programmes this year to mark its 65th anniversary.

In one major initiative, the company in a public private partnership in collaboration with Vocational Training authority has launched a project to set up to set up a vocational training academy for the automobile sector in Rajagirya.

A ceremony to enter into an agreement between the AMW and Vocational training Authority to implement the project was held in Colombo under the patronage of Len Hunt, Chairman of the company who noted that ”People will remember us for implementing projects such as this initiative”.

AMW group Managing Director Samantha Rajapaksa said the vocational training academy will be opened next year and preliminary work is now underway. He revealed that the company’s tyre retreading factories in Kalutara and Anuradhapura brings considerable revenue for the company from tyre exports.

AMW has also announced the implementation of a new Customer Loyalty Programme, which in addition to many more special offerings to come, will help fulfill the dreams of many hoping to purchase their first car or upgrade to their dream one, he said. Established in 1949 by Sir Cyril de Zoysa (1896 to 1978), Associated Motorways pioneered the concept of harnessing Sri Lanka’s natural rubber for the manufacture of rubber products, chief of which was for tyre rebuilding. Sir Cyril’s success story made him one of the most successful entrepreneurs in the country.

In 1959 AMW was appointed distributor for Nissan Motor Co. Ltd, a partnership that has brought the iconic vehicles of Nissan to Sri Lankan’s for decades. In 1982 the world renowned motorcycle and marine manufacture Yamaha came under the umbrella of AMW.

In 1992, AMW was appointed sole agent for Maruti Suzuki India Ltd, and later on in 2006 they became agents for the Suzuki Motor Corporation. Having been aligned with the global development strategy of the Al Futtaim Group, Associated Motorways is now a multinational company, a media release of the company said.
