Theatre is a powerful tool of communication and this August the Zonta Club III will present Eve Ensler’s ‘The Vagina Monologues’ as part of its ‘No to Violence’ Initiative to create awareness of the harmful effects of violence on women and children to audiences in Sri Lanka.

The internationally acclaimed play will be performed in collaboration with Poor-Box Productions, an award-winning theatre company based in Mumbai India. Based on over 200 interviews with women about their views on sex, relationships, and violence against women “The Vagina Monologues” captures the real life experiences of women as penned by playwright Ensler. Since its debut in 1996 the Monologues have earned worldwide popularity leaving audiences in laughter, tears outrage with their realistic thought provoking messages. For more than a decade the play has given a voice to the voiceless and to expressions that have never before been exposed to the public, addressing issues and educating the public on social attitudes towards violence against women.

The performance will be directed by Mahabanoo-Mody Kotwal, an internationally acclaimed producer, director and stage and screen actor, chosen by Femina Magazine as one of the 50 most powerful women in India in 2007.

Echoing the message of the play the goal in the Zonta biennium 2014-16 is to launch an advocacy campaign to decrease the violence and abuse committed against women of various backgrounds and experiences.

The Zonta Club III in collaboration with Poor- Box Productions present Eve Ensler’s “The Vagina Monologues” on August 24 at the British School Auditorium. The show will run for two performances and is for adults only. For updates on tickets and the box plan visit the ZOnta Club III page at www.facebook.com/zontaclub3.
