A Pakistani national died on Thursday following a fall from a ship anchored in Colombo, the coroner’s court was told. The deceased, Sakier Ahmad aged 52, a father of two from Karachi, was the Second Engineer of the ship. He had been trying to get into a ship with the help of a rope ladder but had slipped and fallen into the sea.

Giving evidence, Master Divers employee, Jagath Idunil Kodikara, 32, said that the engineer lost his balance while climbing up to the ship, and fell to his death.

He was taken ashore and rushed to the Colombo National Hospital where he was pronounced dead on admission.
His brother, Imran Ahmad Khan, 37, requested Ashroff Rumi, the Inquirer into Sudden Deaths, to hand over the body without a postmortem, to which Mr. Rumi agreed.
The Inquirer concluded that death was due to drowning, following a fall from a ship.
