The Navy yesterday unearthed a massive ammunition cache on the beach at Vellamullivaikal in Mullaitivu which was described as the single largest find since the end of the ethnic war in September 2009, a senior Naval official said. Navy Spokesman Kosala Warnakulasuriya said the find included 56,000 rounds of Magnum Pistol ammunition, 120,000 rounds of 9 mm and 2,750 of 12-bore shotgun cartridges.

He said that the ammunition had been cleverly packed with grease, so that it could be used even after another 10 years. The detection was made by Navy intelligence sleuths from the Eastern Naval Command, following information provided by local fishermen, the spokesman said.
