Political parties, TUs on their marks and getting set for May Day

More than 25 rallies and meetings will be held by political parties and trade unions to mark May Day; of these 20 rallies and processions will be in Colombo and five outstations, including rallies in Bandarawela, Talawakele, Nuwara Eliya and Hatton.
The UPFA will have their May Day meet at Campbell Park, Borella. Their procession will start from Nelum Pokuna near Town Hall and proceed to the venue via Punchi Borella. The National Freedom Front and the Mahajana Eksath Peramuna (MEP) will join the UPFA for their rally and meeting.

The UNP will hold their May Day rally in Ampara starting at 2 pm, said Media spokesman Gayantha Karunathilake. The Jathika Sewa Sangamaya and all UNP trade unions will join the UNP rally.

The JVP (Peoples Liberation Front) will commence their procession from Dehiwala at 12 noon and proceed to BRC grounds where the rally will commence at 3 p.m.‘People’s Power Red Rally’ is their May Day theme.

The Democratic Party led by Sarath Fonseka will have their May Day rally at Pelawatte, Battaramulla. The procession will start opposite HSBC, Rajagiriya, at 1 pm. The rally will commence at 4 pm, a party spokesman said.

The TNA is holding their May Day celebrations in Chavakachcheri, Jaffna, in the evening.

The Communist Party (CP), along with four other parties, will hold their May Day rally in Kirulapone.

They will be joined by the Lanka Sama Samaja Party (LSSP), the Democratic Front, the Sri Lankan People’s Party and the Desha Vimukthi Janatha Party (DVJP). The procession starting from Kirulapone will proceed towards the Ananda Samarakoon grounds in Nugegoda for the meeting. Their theme would be the call for the abolishment of the Executive Presidency, and to defeat imperialist conspiracies.

CMEU President Bala Thampo said they would go it alone on May Day. Their rally starts in front of Cinnamon Grand Hotel, Kollupitiya, and the procession would proceed past Galle Face Green and return to the Liberty Plaza roundabout, before returning to the CMEU head office for their meeting.
