With the aim of enabling students to explore and celebrate their creativity, another Galle Children’s Festival concluded successfully with the participation of 480 students from 13 schools.  The Galle Children’s Festival, also known as the Galle Children’s Mini Fest 2014, organised by the Serendipity Trust (Guarantee) Ltd and the Department of Education (Southern Province) took place recently at Olcott Maha Vidyalaya (MV).

A school teacher conveyed her ideas on the festival saying it was ‘a good experience for the kids. They had an opportunity to develop and recognize their skills’. While bringing school children, teachers, and many others under one roof, this year organizers broadened the schedule by adding 24 different workshops. The programme commenced with a glamorous opening ceremony which comprised of various items by the students of Olcott MV. Later the students were divided into groups and moved from one workshop to another with their team mates. This really offered the children a good experience and it was fun for them to meet new friends from different schools.

Creative Writing, Pottery Painting, Theatre, Japanese Calligraphy, Fabric Design, Handprint Art, Drama Games, Jump Rope, Origami were some of the workshops awaiting the children. “I never in my life dreamt that I possessed a talented artist within myself,” a school girl said while leaving a fabric design workshop with a bag which had an elegant design.

The event drew to a close after a fantastic closing ceremony. “It was a great time to create, innovate and challenge imaginations,” smiled a little enthusiast who was thrilled to take part in the programme. This event was indeed a novel and exceptional experience for everyone.
As an organisation which frequently works with children, the Serendipity Trust hopes to hold regular Galle Children’s ‘Mini Fests’ as part of their community outreach program throughout the year 2014. Further information can be obtained at www.serendipitytrust.com
