Spot fine payments through mobile phones

Spot fine payments through mobile phones will soon be a reality by June, the Police Media Spokesperson said this week.

SSP Ajith Rohana told a panel discussion on “Home security and preventing crime” on Wednesday organized by the Sunday Times Business Club (STBC) that the moment a police station has been alerted that the fine has been paid to the service provider, the license would be released.

“This will eliminate the need to go back to the police station where an offence took place (in case the offender lives in Colombo and the incident occurred in Monaragala), as the fine can be instantly paid,” he said. Currently spot fines for minor offences means the offender has to go to the police station, collect a charge sheet, go to the nearest post office, pay the fine, and collect the license from the police station on submission of the payment receipt.

Spot fines came into existence some years back eliminating the need for the police to file every minor traffic offence in court. Provision to pay the fine through mobile telecommunication makes the process much easier and convenient.
