Left Front leader Dr. Wickramabahu Karunaratne was yesterday questioned by the Police for two hours over the allegation of submitting a list containing fraudulent names for nomination to the Gampaha District for the upcoming provincial council elections.
A senior police officer said they had recorded the statement of Dr Karunaratne and would be carrying out further investigations into the submission of the fraudulent names. “We have to question several other people in relation to the fraud before concluding the investigations,” the officer said.

Dr. Karunaratne told the Sunday Times that he suspected the involvement of some of his opponents in the election and had informed the police of his suspicions in the statement he gave to the police.

Although there is controversy regarding the nomination list of the NSSP containing fraudulent information, Dr Karunaratne claimed the fraud had nothing to do with him.

He said merely signed the papers without checking the authenticity of the documents beforehand stating that it was his ‘political trust’ in the organisation of retired teachers that allowed him to make such a mistake.

However the NSSP would continue to participate in the elections despite some of the names being fraudulent, Dr.Karunaratne said, adding that mote than 25 members of his party would be contesting.
