Prof J.B Disanayaka to deliver W.H. Samaranayake Memorial Oration
View(s):Emeritus Professor of Sinhala of the University of Colombo Prof. J.B Disanayaka will deliver the inaugural W.H. Samaranayake Memorial Oration on Friday, November 22 at 6.30 p.m. at the auditorium of the Expographic Bookstore at No. 455 Pannipitiya Road, Pelawatta. The theme of the Oration will be “W.H. Samaranayake’s legacy to the sphere of English Education in Sri Lanka”.
Organised by the W.H. Samaranayake Foundation, the event will also feature a memorial appreciation by the Bishop of Kurunegala Rt. Rev. Shantha Francis, recounting his memories of his former teacher, the late W.H. Samaranayake.
W.H. Samaranayake was an outstanding educationist, grammarian and philanthropist who authored the ‘Practical English’ and ‘English with a Smile’ series, which from the time of publication in the 1940s have not lost their prestige as study guides to the students and teachers of English.
Apart from being an author, he also published these books himself, a tradition that is being passionately followed by his family. As the founder Principal of St. Bernadette’s College, Polgahawela, he was instrumental in putting up the school buildings to provide sound education to many students of Polgahawela to date.
