The New Zealand side which is scheduled to play Sri Lanka soon is nowhere near full strength with several key players absent from its ranks. This week the Sunday Times set out to discover if this presented an opportunity to test out new talent or should ri Lanka capitalize on their weak opposition and play for an easy victory with a strong, battle-tested team?

I think it’s important that we win the series. That should be our primary focus as a serious, professional team. Once we have done this then we can start experimenting with the team. - Dilan Prabash (Private sector employee)

We should use the tour to explore the potential of young players and give them a chance to gain some experience. - Druvinke Peiris (Student)

This is the ideal time to try out young players. We should try and make maximum use of these opportunities to groom young talent. Most of the senior players are now nearing the end of their careers so we must not waste time. - Keerthi Guneratne (School cricket coach)

I think we should stick with the regular side because our team is very unpredictable. If you put in new players all of a sudden you never know what will happen. We should just focus on winning by putting in the strongest possible side. - Navindra Malalgoda (Student)

This is a good opportunity to play our youngsters. We should try new combinations and players during times like these rather than putting in the same old players. - Anu Rakavan (Private sector employee)

We should try using a young team. We need guys like Thirimanne, Chandimal and Kusal to gain experience, there are not many years left for the seniors in our side. We also need to start looking for good, young wicket-taking bowlers. - Rakitha Nanayakkara (Student)

We can try out new players but we should make sure we don’t go overboard and sacrifice an easy series victory. Even if they are not taking this series seriously we shouldn’t do the same. Winning is important for the team’s confidence. - Ruwan Chinthaka (Private sector employee)

If we experiment too much we might end up losing to a weak team. I think winning at home matters a lot, even if we are not facing a team at full strength. We can bring in young players when we are ahead. - Suren Seneviratne (Private sector employee)
