The Lanka Decorative Arts (LDA) is to hold an international conference titled “Ivory and The Elephant: A Historical Perspective” from November 26-28. This is the fourth conference organised by the LDA.  The sessions will be held at the Dutch Burger Union Hall in Bauddhaloka Mawatha Colombo, and the Jetwing Lighthouse Hotel, Galle.

The sessions cover a wide variety of aspects such as Sri Lankan ivory crafts that were exported in the Portuguese and Dutch periods, the export of Sri Lankan ivory crafts to China and even conservation of elephants.  Speakers will include experts from different fields all around the globe, including curators past and present from Museums in Leiden, Lisbon and Amsterdam, architects, professors and even ecologists.

Enthusiasts and students of the arts are invited to participate in the sessions. Student rates will be available and tickets will be on sale from November 1, at the Dutch Burgher Union.  The Goethe Institute will be screening the film “Chandani and her Elephant” on November 25 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. prior to the commencement of the conference.

The session for November 26 is titled “Sri Lankan and South Indian Ivories for the Home Market.” November 27 will feature sessions 2 and 3 which are titled “Sri Lankan Ivories from the Portuguese and Dutch period” and “Chinese Export Ivories” respectively. The fourth session will be held in Galle, on Thursday November 28 and will be titled “Ecology and Conservation: Protecting Elephants.”
