Eight more records tumble on fourth day

Eight more new records were established in the morning and afternoon sessions on day four of the All Island School Games Athletic Championship held at the Sugathadasa Stadium.Of the six records that were broken in the two sessions Supun Viraj Randeniya who in fact broke the Boys Under 21 100m hurdle ended with the same timing of 14.30secs in the final.

The other new five records comprised of four in the boys and three in the girls categories. The four records in the boys were in the Under 21 Boys high jump event where Thilina Karunaratne of Royal Colombo leaped a new height of 2.13m.

Three records were in the track events with M.M.K. Kushantha of Nalanda setting a new time of 3.59.76secs in the Boys Under 19 1500m while E.M. Supun Nimansha of Gurukula MV in the Boys Under 15 400m hurdles established a new record of 51.86secs.
The last record to be broken for the day was in the Boys Under 17 1500m by M.G.S.I. Umayanga of Pushpanada MV Ambatenna when he eclipsed a record that stood since 1996 with a timing of 4.06.85secs.

The three records to be established in the girls’ category were two in the field and one in the track event. In the Under 17 age group P.W. Dasuni Vinodya of Kuliyapitiya Central set a new record of 11.90m while in the Under 19 age group H.D. Vidusha Lakshani of Newstead Girls High School Negombo leaped 12.31m.

The track event record was by O.M. Iduranga Sathsarani of Vijitha MMV Dickwella in the Girls Under 15 400m where she ended with a new timing of 59.35secs.

So far 17 new records have been established with most of these being achieved by athletes in the boys and girls categories from the outstation schools.

The curtains of the All Island School Games Athletics Championship will come down today with President Mahinda Rajapakse gracing the occasion as the chief guest.
