New rules to make road travel safer for you and me

In the face of the rapidly increasing number of bus accidents, traffic police are taking measures to introduce a new set of rules to make our public transport safer. Research has shown that a majority of accidents are caused by unnecessary posters or stickers on windscreens of vehicles which curtail the range of vision of the driver. As such, over the past five months traffic police in the western province have been conducting awareness programmes to educate drivers and bus owners regarding the risks associated with covering their windscreens with unnecessary paraphernalia.

Police say as a result of these awareness programmes the rate of accidents between January 2013 to May had declined by 60%. Newly imposed rules prohibit the pasting of pictures, stickers etc on the left side of the windscreen, with the only exception being revenue licence and registration number. It also states destination boards should be fixed in the allocated place above the windscreen or on the upper corner of the windscreen.

The placing of decorative items and baggage on top of the dashboard obstructing the view of the driver has also been banned. Pasting stickers or notices on the rear windshield is prohibited while it advises posting the destination board on the top corner of the rear windshield.  It is also mentioned that to decrease risks of accidents additional light could be fixed only parallel to or below the main headlamps.

Police have also ordered bus drivers to stop only at bus halts, avoid tardy driving and have instructed them to strictly adhere to all conditions laid down in the licence book issued to provincial buses by the National Transport Commission.
