Mobitel launches NFC enabled SIM cards

Sri Lankan celco Mobitel has announced that it has begun offering Near Field Communication (NFC) enabled SIM cards locally, giving users the potential to make payments by tapping their smartphones on terminals in retail environments.

Further, the mobile provider has stated it is also currently offering a number of other applications via its suite of Business Solutions, including a NFC fuel card. In addition, Mobitel commented that it also offers attendance management systems, identification and access control systems, visitor management systems and even parking management. Also noted, prepaid and postpaid subscribers can access discounts and other benefits via Mobitel’s NFC-enabled Club Magnate loyalty programme.

According to its announcement; “One of the key advantages of SIM based NFC is the inherent ability to connect and synchronise consumer data to the NFC platform via a TSM (Trusted Service Manager). This empowers consumers to check his/her value balances and other vital information relating to a particular NFC service through the mobile phone itself while ensuring highest security without having to reach a NFC Terminal device”.
