The much anticipated 15th edition of ‘Culinary Art 2013’, organised by the Chefs Guild of Sri Lanka held from August 2 to 5, at the BMICH ended with massive positive feedback from the public as well as the participants.

We are the champions! The Heritage Ahungalla team

The culinary battles culminated on August 5, with the awards ceremony where the most outstanding competitors were announced and appreciated. Many chefs, representing various hotels all over Sri Lanka walked away with medals and trophies. The hotel that stood out winning many awards was ‘Heritance Ahungalla’ which also won the Champion’s trophy for the Most Outstanding Hotel.

The winner of the award for the most outstanding chef was won by chef de partie of ‘Heritance Ahungalla’, Kapila Priyantha De Silva who also won four gold medals. “I have been in the hotel trade since 1994 and it has been a long journey since then. It was never simple and easy.

I won four silver medals at Culinary Art 2012. This competition has helped so many amateurs and chefs over the years and I’m really thankful to the Chefs Guild of Sri Lanka for providing us with such an opportunity,” said Chef Priyantha.
Navoda Ranjeewa, also from ‘Heritance Ahungalla’ won the award for the ‘Most Outstanding Apprentice’ with three gold medals displaying extraordinary talent for an amateur in the field. He thanked his team mates for helping him throughout his budding journey of just two years.

Speaking to the Sunday Times about the success of the show, Chefs Guild of Sri Lanka chairman, Gerard Mendis said, “This is identified as one of the largest hotel shows in Asia and was also recognized by the World Association of Chefs’ Societies (WACS) and judged entirely by WACS approved professionals from all around the world.” The WACS President was here in Sri Lanka for the show.
The winners will go abroad to take part in international competitions and bring awards for the country, he said, stressing the urgent need for assistance and sponsorship by the government.
