Copacabana: Not just another beach

View(s):

Three million people flocked to Copacabana Beach in Brazil to listen to Pope Francis on his visit there last month, bringing this world famous spot into fresh focus. Pilgrims and locals set up tents and sleeping bags by the sea on Copacabana beach, to witness the unique service, aimed especially at the youth.

Last June Copacabana wasn’t this full, but there was no mistaking its glamour. The first thing that strikes you is how clean it is despite hundreds of holiday- makers flocking there daily. Sun-bathing bikini clad lasses and guys playing the soft waves of the Atlantic are iconic images one associates with Copacabana; but there is more to it.

This stretch of coastline located in the southern part of Rio de Janeiro in Copacabana is often referred to as the world’s most famous beach. It extends through two and a half miles along a curved stretch. On one side, Copacabana is fringed by high rises that came almost to the edge of the beach like a protective wall. On the other side, the Atlantic Ocean stretches invitingly out. At a distance, Rio’s mountain ranges can be seen including the famous Sugar Loaf. Almost all the popular travel guides in the world name Copacabana among top 10 best beaches of the world.

There is much to experience in Copacabana in addition to having a dip in the sea. The beach is surrounded by small restaurants serving fast food and drinks. At some spots, there are musicians playing guitars and singing a kind of a country music. At a corner of the beach, you’ll find the bronze statue of a singing guitarist.

The pavement in Copacabana is yet another unique feature, designed with small black and white rock pieces depicting a geometric wave.

Visiting the top of the Sugar Loaf Mountain va cable car offers a look at the Copacabana beach from air. It is yet another spectacular view that shouldn’t be missed.
