Sri Lanka’s first PhD in news journalism

Sri Lanka’s first PhD on news journalism in local language newspapers was awarded to a research thesis by Ranga Kalansooriya at the Sri Jayawardenepura University convocation held at the BMICH on Thursday, July 11.

The research paper titled “Reporting Ethnicity in Vernacular Press in Sri Lanka” discusses the professional standards in Sinhala and Tamil news journalism through extensive.

Supervised by Prof. Tissa Kariyawasam and Prof. Dhammika Ganganath Dissanayake, the thesis analyses and compares the news reporting standards during three selected time frames, before, during and after the ethnic conflict through a structured analytical framework.

Ranga started out as a trainee journalist at Dinamina in the early 90s and went on to become the Director General of the Sri Lanka Press Institute that manages the Sri Lanka College of Journalism and the Press Complaints Commission of Sri Lanka. Currently he is the Regional Advisor for Asia of International Media Support functioning as an international media trainer and media development consultant.

He is the son of late journalist Somadevi Paranayapa and late civil servant Siriwardhana Kalansooriya.
