Three new meet records were established in the women’s events at the Matale District Inter-Divisional Secretariat Region Track and Field Athletic Meet, held recently at the Bernard Aluvihare Stadium in Matale.

Krithiha Ratneshwaran, a student of Girls’ High School Kandy, who represented a new meet record in the women’s triple jump, receives her award from the chief guest Luxman Wasantha Perera. Ratneshwaran also won the women’s high jump event, by clearing a distance of 1.58metres and 100metre hurdles with a timing of 19.5seconds. Medhani Wickramaratne of Matale DSR set up a new meet record in the women’s 100 metre sprint with a timing of 12.4 seconds while Krithiha Ratneshwaran also from Matale DSR established the other new meet record in the women’s triple jump clearing a distance of 10.85 metres. The third record came in the women’s 5000 metre event where Disna Ekanayake from Laggala-Pallegama DSR set a new record of 19 minutes and 11 seconds. The meet was organised by the Matale District Sports Office under the second phase of the 39th National Sports Festival.

After a lapse of five years, the Matale DSR, with an aggregate of 61 points, emerged overall champions, while Ukuwela DRS finished runner-up with 37 points, followed by Naula DSR, who accumulated 21 points to finish as overall third.

Matale’s Medhani Wickramaratne, who clocked the best timing in women’s 100 metres with a new record, was adjudged the Best Woman Athlete. Y.G. Nadula Dharshana of Matale, who clocked 11.5 seconds in the men’s 100 metres event, won the Best Performance Trophy for Men. Over 300 athletes representing men and women categories representing 11 Divisional Secretariat Regions took part this year. – L.D. Chandrasiri from Matale
