Moors SC began their Under 23 Division one cricket tournament on a winning note when they crushed the hapless newcomers Negombo CC by an innings and 128 runs in the match concluded at Kadirana yesterday with the match ending before the lunch break.
The highlight of the match was a swashbuckling unbeaten knock of 214 by left hand batsman Shehan Jayasuriya who was supported by right hand batsman Oshada Fernando who made a 110.

The pair added a valuable 249 runs for the fourth wicket enabling Moors SC to post a formidable score of 417 for 7 declared in reply to Negombo CC’s paltry score of 139.

Negombo CC batting the second time with a deficit of 278 runs fell into deep trouble as they lost three early wickets with just 20 runs on the board on day two.

Negombo CC resuming on their overnight score had little to offer. They succumbed to right arm spinner Kaushalya Gajasinghe who grabbed four scalps in the first inning. He repeated the same feat in the second innings to bowl out Negombo CC for 161. Kaushalya ended with a match bag of 8 for 54.

Tamil Union too began their campaign on a winning note with a four wicket win over Singha SC Ambalangoda which concluded at the P. Sara Oval yesterday.

But Tamil Union underwent some anxious moments in their run chase of 110 runs as they lost six wickets before they could reach the required target. Earlier Singha SC who was bundled for a meager 93 made a fight back as they had to erase a deficit of 195 runs after Tamil Union made a score of 288.

They ended the second days proceedings with a score of 289 for 7 thanks to some stiff resistance put by Udesh Priyanga who remained unbeaten on 104. Resuming their innings on day three they were able to add only a further 15 runs as the dismissal of Udesh for a knock of 110 saw them being bowled out for 304.

Air Force had already obtained a first inning lead over Leo CC when play had ended on the second day in the match played at the Surrey Village ground in Maggona.

Leo CC taking first lease of the wicket made a score of 276 which came on the back of a fine knock of 135 by Dushan Vimukthi while Air Force in their turn guided by half tons from Angelo Emmanuel, Sajith Fernando and Nipun Pavithra made a reply of 333.Leo CC having ended on 20 for no loss and resuming their innings on day three were 168 for 2 when play stopped for lunch.

Colts too have taken a first inning lead over CCC in the match played at the CCC ground. The final days play saw CCC resuming their second innings on their overnight score of 206 for 5 ended their innings on 317 for 9 declared with Maduka Liyanapathirana making a top score of 87 which included three boundaries and seven sixes.

This left Colts a target of 291 runs in 61 and they were 17 for no loss having faced four overs and two sessions of play left to achieve their target.
