Rev. Amunumulle Jinarathana Thera, Viharadhipathi of the historic Sri Vijayarama Raja Maha Viharaya of Gangodawila was honoured by the Sri Kalyani Sama Sri Dharma Maha Sanga Sabha, of Sri Jayawardenapura, Kotte with the title ‘Saddharma Kirthi Sri’ last Tuesday February 19.

Most Rev. Prof. Iththapana Dhammalankara thero presided at the felicitation ceremony. This honour has been bestowed in view of the historicity of the vihara and the yeoman service rendered to the Buddha Sasana.

Born as the youngest to a family of seven children in Amunumulla, Monaragala, he was entered to Kotamuduna Maha Vidyala in Passara where he obtained his primary education. What prompted him to attain priesthood was encouragement of Weerasinghe, one of his cousins since he was often seen at Jinendraramaya, the village temple.
Ven. Jinarathana attained priesthood on January 20, 1981 under the guidance of Ven. Amunumulle Indrarathana Thera and entered Viydaththansa Pirivena to pursue his studies. He was offered a lecturer’s post at Mahindarama Pirivena in Badulla and following his two year course at the teacher training institute he obtained a certificate in teaching.
