With the conclusion of ‘the big four’ fashion weeks of the world comes news of Sri Lanka’s own premier fashion event; The HSBC Colombo Fashion Week that has grown each time it has taken place. From 2012 it has now become two events strategically placed through the year so that it can properly address the growing need to provide a platform for the growing fashion innovation, and design talent emerging locally while meeting the increasing demand for Spring/Summer & Resort Wear clothing worldwide.

The Great Colombo Fashion Company is set to present HSBC Colombo Fashion Week, now in its 10th year on April 3, 4, 5, 2013 featuring high profile designers from eight countries. Included in the line-up are Bibi Russell, Radhika Hernandez, Agatha Ruiz de La Prada and talented local designers such as Dimuthu Sahabandu, Deneth Piumakshi and Darshi Keerthisena to name a few. There will be 30 designers showing in total– vying for critical acclaim.

“This is an interesting year for the fashion design industry of Sri Lanka, a lot has been done last year like starting the Resortwear Fashion Week to create a second platform to promote Sri Lankan designers. This has set the stage for bigger things for Sri Lankan designers this year,” said Ajai Singh, President HSBC Colombo Fashion Week.

A feature this year will be the new Sri Lankan designers who have not shown at all and the company is excited at unveiling their strong talent.

Over the past decade, the Great Colombo Fashion Company together with its many partners have helped HSBC Colombo Fashion Week maintain its singular vision of developing and uplifting Colombo’s fashion design industry by supporting new fashion designers and guiding the existing designers towards important retail opportunities in Sri Lanka and beyond. Local designers winning the prestigious “Gen-Next” award offered in partnership with Procter and Gamble through its mentorship and guidance process have been able to reach new heights and this year too, they hope to do so with a selected group.

The focus this year will also be to showcase new up and coming designers in the region therefore not only adding new names to the platform but showcasing new trends and concepts.

The HSBC Colombo Fashion week, the country’s premier lifestyle event and also dubbed the region’s ‘true international fashion week’ due to its links with Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Russia, Miami Fashion Week, Dubai Fashion Festival and Malaysian Fashion Week, is looking to promote Sri Lanka as a hub for buyers of Resortwear and Spring/Summer clothing from any part of the world; A vital link that will also provide entry for international designers into South Asia which is fast becoming an important fashion market globally.

This year too, a Sri Lankan designer will be given the opportunity to show at the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Russia in September on the main ramp!
