Sri Lankan photographers are being encouraged to submit photographs for an exhibition titled ‘Women - Out of The Frame.’ The exhibition’s broad general theme is ‘Women’, explains photographer, organiser and jury member Menika van der Poorten, adding that she’s looking forward to seeing photographers participate from all across the island.

The Out of the Frame Exhibition will include workshops both before and during the actual event and is focused on selecting artists who succeed in ‘visually reflecting and revealing the complexities of a woman’s world.’

Menika explains that the photographs need not actually feature women to still provide meaningful commentary and while she is leaning towards photographers who submit a set of pictures that tell a story, individual entries will have as good a chance. ‘We are interested in photographic images that are reflective of a diversity of photographic practice, and go beyond stereotypical images of women current in Sri Lankan mainstream media.’

Photographers are also encouraged to play around with technique and style and to create abstract and experimental works as well as documentary style photographs.  Photographers are requested to include a brief note explaining the intent or the concept behind the work as well to provide a few details about themselves. The final selection will be made by a panel of judges. An estimated 20 to 30 photographers and 100 to 120 photographs will make the final cut. Entrants can submit work individually or as a collective or group.

The closing date for entries is March 24 and the exhibition itself will be on from July 4-10, at the Lionel Wendt Art Gallery. Exhibitors can look forward to seeing their photographs professionally printed and framed for the exhibition and space in the gallery. They will also receive further exposure through a full colour exhibition catalogue featuring the participating photographers and their work and placement on a dedicated 12 month website.

The initiative is presented by Menika van der Poorten and supported by the Royal Norwegian Embassy and the National Peace Council.
