Trinity College board, manager quit over acting principal’s extension

Four members of the Board of Governors and the Manager of one of the leading private schools in the country, Trinity College, Kandy, resigned this week, citing subversion of previous decisions taken regarding the suitability of the Acting Principal to hold the post.

The four members of the Board of Governors are Trinity OBA (parent body) President Nissanka Nillegoda, Prince Nayagam, Sanjiva Wijesinghe and Jayantha Jayawardena. The Manager is Dr. Thalgahegoda.

Their resignation is in protest of what they call the questionable teaching qualifications of the Acting Principal, and his rank in the Army at the time of retirement.
The Board of Governors, at its previous meeting in October last year, decided that, as the Acting Principal was unable to produce the relevant teaching certificates, his employment would not be renewed at the end of his contract. They say that the Chairman of the Board, Bishop Shantha Francis had, however, extended the contract of the Acting Principal, contrary to the decision of the Board of Governors.

Bishop Shantha Francis told the Sunday Times that the OBA President was in any case due to end his term while the others have resigned on difference of opinion.
