‘Tharumalee’, a story of a rural village that subjected to drastic changes with colonial invation is the latest mega teleplay that was released on Swarnavahini channel and telecast at 9.30 pm on every weekday starting from February 13.  Directed by Mahendra Kulasinghe, ‘Tharumalee’ is played by a group of young and talented stars like Vinu Siriwardana, Suraj Mapa, Kavinga Perera, Udayanthi Kulathunga, Kanchana Kodituwakku, Chamupa Godage, Buddhadasa Vithanachchi, Meena Kumari, Janaka Kumbukage, Kumari Munasinghe and Ajith Lokuge.

The protagonist Tharumalee is an innocent girl hailing from a poor background. She lives with her parents Kusumawathi and Jayaratne in a village called Ittepana which is well known for tea cultivation.

Kusumawathi works under Edward Rajawansa who is the owner of large tea estates. Jayaratne runs a small boutique in the village. Tharumalee continues her studies despite many a hardships.

Whenever Edward Rajawansa visits the bungalow in this tea estate, Kusumawathi’s family helps with the household chores. The story takes a dramatic turn when Edward Rajawansa, his wife Srimathi and son Suraj comes to reside permanently in the estate bungalow. Estate clerk Kuruwita assigns Kusumawathi and Tharumalee to help in the work in the bungalow. Meanwhile Colombo’s well known building contractor Senaka Wijenayake’s eldest son Nirmal Wijenayake comes Ittepana village. He is being waylaid and assaulted by two gangsters Raja and Dharme. He is found unconscious near a deserted road.

One day Suraj meets Tharumalee in the bungalow. Attracted by Tharumalee’s beauty Suraj tries to seduce her but she scuffs him and escapes. Suraj develops vengeance against Tharumalee. Scripted by Sanath Samaranayake, shot by Dileepa Pussella, the teledrama is edited by Saman Ariyaratne, while Jayantha Samaarwickrema and Sameera Weerasinghe handle the art direction.
