Over 180,000 new voters have registered with the Department of Elections, according to latest electoral registers which will be used this year.

The biggest increases have been in the Gampaha and Nuwara Eliya districts where the registered voters have gone up by about 20,000 while in Colombo, Kandy, Kalutara, Jaffna Anuradhapura Galle and Ratnapura too the number of registered voters has increased by about 9,000- 12,000.

However, in Trincomalee district, the number of registered voters has increased only by about 1,500 while new voter registrations have been low in the Wanni, Batticaloa and Polonnaruwa districts.

The total registered voter population in the country stands at 14, 451,263 as against 14,268,064 for 2011.
