The Annual Prize Giving 2011 of Bandarawela Kuda Kusum Balika M.V. was held on 15th of January, 2012 at Bandarawela Town Hall. The Minister of Education Bandula Gunawardana was the Chief Guest at this event. Badulla District Parliament member Dr.Rohana Pushpakumara, Bandarawela Municipal Council Mayor Chaminda Wijesiri, Badulla District parliament member Chamika Buddhadasa, Provincial Director of Uva Education Department R.M.P.Rathnayake and the principals of neighbouring schools were invited as special guests.

Upon arrival at the town hall, the guests ceremonially welcomed by the Principal Mrs.A.C.Padmini and the vice principals and followed a Guard of Honuor by the college band of St’Thomas’ College, Bandarawela and a combined parade of St’Thomas’ College, St’Josephs’ College and Dharmapala MV Bandarawela.

Kuda Kusum Balika M.V. is one of the leading girls’ schools in Bandarawela. The college was established in 1927 under Rev. Mother Mary Casilda as its first principal. This year Kuda Kusum Balika M.V. is celebrating its 85th anniversary.

The event was initiated with the religious observance and lighting the oil lamp. Then the Principal welcomed the gathering and read the annual report.

District Parliament member Dr.Rohana Pushpakumara stated that we are peacefully celebrating functions as our President and the tri-forces ended the 30 years of war. He also said that after the elimination of scourge terrorism under the leadership of His Excellency the President Mahinda Rajapaksa, the students can now engage in their education without any hesitation. Now we are in the development path. Our President is now rebuilding the educational system to bring up a skilled society to the future nation.

Speaking at the event Minister of Education Hon.Bandula Gunawardana stated” this is one of the school which was established during the period of British missionary education. Now we are free and on our own path, searching for a skillful education. In the coming years we are planning to develop 13 schools in Bandarawela with all the facilities. We will be introducing a new stream for the advanced level in 2014 which will be a technical education. Those who do not get through the Ordinary level also will be able to follow this stream if they get through only in the technical subject in their O/L. They can obtain an NVQ degree as well.

Minister of Education presented the children with medals, trophies and certificates for their outstanding performances in academic and extracurricular activities. Subject prize winners, Class prize winners, the best performers at G.C.E.(O/L) and G.C.E.(A/L) examinations 2011, best performers of grade 5 scholarship examination and the best performers of extracurricular activities were awarded with medals.
