The success of the government’s planned mega project, C-city – the one stop shop for all construction needs coming up in Peliyagoda – depends on the initial deposit or advance that is to be charged from those building materials and services’ suppliers who would set up their units in the C-city complex.

The one-stop-shop for building materials and services is being constructed in Peliyagoda on a 16-acre block of land. The government intends to build 250 units to house these suppliers and service providers. The project would be completed by December this year.
As the Treasury has refused to give the funds required for the project, the project would be completed with the initial deposits and bank loans.

The launch of the project took place in Colombo last week with Wimal Weerawansa, Minister of Construction, Engineering Services, Housing and Common Amenities as Chief Guest.

Saliya Kaluarachchi, Secretary, Ceylon Institute of Builders (CIOB), who was present at the launch, told the Business Times (BT) that this type of projects are common in other countries and is good to have something similar in Sri Lanka.

But, he said that charging a massive sum of around Rs 2.5 million (as a deposit) is a very high figure and the average businessman would not venture to dump this much of money and tie it up with no return.

He said that in addition to this there would also be a monthly fee of around Rs 70,000 per month. He said that it would be viable if the deposit is reduced considerably and if the monthly fee is increased and then C-City stall holders could pay the rental while selling their products and this way the project would be more feasible.

Another businessman, Anura Wijeratna, a large scale solar power provider, told the BT that the project was useful as everybody who would want to build a house would visit C-city.
