US re-imposes sanctions on fleeing Iranian ship

The US Treasury, which had waived sanctions on the Iranian ship M.V. Amina to allow it to be sold and for a German bank to collect the proceeds, has revoked the licence after the vessel broke arrest in Sri Lanka.
“The M.V. Amina IMO 9305192, formerly known as the Shere, was subject to sanctions as it is a part of the Iranian Republic of Iran Shipping Lines, a designated entity,” John Sullivan, a Treasury Spokesman, told the Sunday Times.

“The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) at the Department of the Treasury had issued a General License which authorised all transactions related to the arrest, detention, and judicial sale of the vessel,” he elaborated.

“When the vessel fled arrest we revoked this license,” he said. The ship was detained at the Galle Port in December on an Admiralty (High) Court Order obtained by DV Bank SE, a leading German institution that specialises in commercial transportation finance. The ship mysteriously fled into international waters on January 16. The US licence was revoked two days later. The vessel is owned by Rahbaran Omid Darya Ship Management Company. Official US documents revealed that this was the new name of Soroush Sarzamin Asatir Ship Management Company. Soroush is a subsidiary of Iran’s national maritime carrier, Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines, a designated entity (IRISL).
