Vegetable prices are likely to remain high despite a marginal drop the past week as the heavy rains destroyed vast extents of crop in several parts of the country.

Farmers in Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa and Matale were the most affected with their harvest being drowned in flash floods caused by the rains.

Paddy cultivators in Vavuniya North said they too were unable to harvest their crop due to the rains. Meanwhile G.T Linganada, a paddy cultivator from the area said the high prices were not only due to adverse weather conditions but also due to some vegetables being out of season and middle men over pricing the goods.
The Sunday Times gives you (above) a comparison of vegetable prices over the past three weeks.
