Mini cager camp set for tip-off
View(s):The Sri Lanka Veteran’s Basketball Association (SLVBA) will conduct its 14th annual Mini Basketball Coaching Camp on January 12 and 13, at the Otters Basketball Courts in Colombo.
The coaching camp will be open for children between the ages of four and 13, who will be trained by leading school coaches.
“The mini basketball coaching programme was launched in 1999 with the support of the committee of management of Otters Sports Club. Since then this programme has produced nearly 1800 players who are now representing leading basketball teams of schools, mercantile teams and also the national team. Girls and boys who have been trained under this programme have produced very good results and have earned a good reputation,” Malsiri Perera, the president of SLVBA said.
The SLVBA conducted its last mini basketball carnival in December 2012 with the participation of over 50 youngsters at the Royal College Indoor Courts. The participants were further encouraged by the organisers, who gave each one of them a free basketball and a sporting bag. According to Perera, this coaching programme is held every six months to help youngsters engage with their respective school teams.
“Prior to the programme, registration will take place before 8.00am on Saturday (12) and practices will commence from then onwards until 10.00am. The following day practices will be held from 4.00pm to 6.00pm. The total duration of the programme will be 18 hours, which will be conducted in portions,” Perera added.
Apart from Perera, the other coaches who will be involved in this programme are Stassen Abel, Rasika Fernando, Apsara Sujeewani, Sorauya Yusuf, Vikum Siriwardena, Z.A.M. Mahroof, Bernard Silva, Jayanthan Jeevaratnam, Vincent Loganathan, Naufel Mahroof and Tony Ganlath.
