important is the student experience and career readiness. These aspects are a key focus of Australian universities. The University of Wollongong (UOW) consistently rates well and maintains an excellent reputation for student satisfaction and gaining employment, and holds a 5 star ranking with the Good Universities Guide, Australia.

Basuru Rajapakse and Namis Ibrahim from Sri Lanka are currently studying at UOW and reflect on their experiences to date. Both students highlight the great diversity in people of Australia, they are welcoming and helpful. The UOW students agree that lecturers are really keen to help them succeed, the biggest difference is the method of knowledge transfer from lecturer to student. The teaching style imbeds practical experience with theory using world class equipment. Lecturers want students to ask questions, explore solutions and actively participate in classes.

Namis is studying a Master of Engineering, majoring in Environmental Engineering, he notes that engineering at UOW is part of the Group of Eight & Associates in Australia, the top universities in the country. He explained that “industrial visits help train me for the competitive global workplace. I need to understand current practices and technologies, studies here have this focus. I hope to be working as an Environmental Engineer in water management, working and learning here will help me meet the future challenges in Sri Lanka and globally.”

Basuru started his undergraduate degree in Sri Lanka and transferred to Australia for second year, studying Bachelor of Computer Science. He enjoys the practical elements of his course, advising “it is hard to know how well you have learnt computing until you put it into practice. I look forward to working in the IT industry as a system analyst. UOW and the city support me to achieve my potential.”

Basuru and Namis have found Wollongong friendly and peaceful, an easy place to give their attention to study. Clubs and Societies on campus have connected them to cultural celebrations they would experience in Sri Lanka, and this helps them feel at home in Wollongong. Basuru said the local Sri Lankan network of students helped him find the food he likes from home. Smiling broadly, he says once you meet one Sri Lankan, you will know them all at UOW.
