Hakmana is a quiet and peaceful town rich in bio-diversity, in the Southern Province. It is 154 km away from Colombo. This is a treasure trove for anyone to live happily with several facilities. Hakmana Methodist Central College is presently the talk of the Hakmana village, especially for its amazing e-village activities.

The legend has it that the name ‘Hakmana’ originated from a promenade used by a sub King called ‘Mini-Kirulu’. A temporary palace of that King, had been built on a hillock belonging to Hakmana and later this place was used to build a village tribunal which is hundred years old.

Hakmana Methodist Central College was started in 1875 by the Methodist Church. Then this was only a 40×20 square foot building thatched with cadjans and the land in which it stood was only 2 roods and 5 perches. From the very start this was directed by the Church of Methodist for several years. Later Pastor W.T Fernando was appointed as its principal.

In 1944 Mr. I. Paranamana became the principal and during his period the school was declared a Buddhist school. In 1988 the school became a central collage and 20 years later following that success Methodist was renovated as an Isuru school under the concept of the ?Mahinda Chinthanaya”. Asian Development Bank aided helped to uplift the infrastructure of the school.

The Principal Mr.G.LThilakarathna

Being selected for this special project was a blessing for all the students, parents, and well wishers. The national inaugural ceremony for Isuru schools was held on October 20, 2008 at the school premises. Many distinguished personalities took part in the event.

As at present with over 1000 students, 60 teachers and another 4 supportive staff, the school has a highly developed and an efficient administrative system headed by Mr. G.L. Thilakarathna. The school provides many facilities to improve the knowledge of the students. The Information Technology Unit, Media Unit, Library, the fully equipped science laboratory, playground and Language Unit are some of them. The English medium section commenced in 2011 and presently 55 students study in the English medium section.

The e-village concept was inaugurated in 2009. This programme was directly coordinated by the S.E.M.P. They initiated the IT facility to encourage students who are keen in Information Technology (IT). After launching of the web sites, they obtained world attention and received hundreds of e-mail from several countries in appreciation of their efforts to empower rural students with IT. The best among these are the activities of their E-Village team. They get together during weekends and after school to conduct computer classes for villagers. Also the students started to maintain information systems through Websites and student documents. As a result, the students started to produce very high results in ICT in G.C.E.(O/L) examinations.

College’s New Appearance

Moreover the students of Methodist CC have done well in public examinations achieving excellent results. They have enjoyed 100% ICT results with a couple of 8 A’s in G.C.E.(O/L) examinations every year. G.C.E. (A/L) too brings them very high success with a number of them entering universities.
Sport is the other area where Methodist students have done well. They emerged runners up in the all island throw ball tournament 2011. The teachers too have a great enthusiasm to do well. Mr. W. Chandradasa won 2nd place in the Discus throw event at the All Island Teachers’ Sports Meet in 2010.
Methodist CC students have shone not only in sports but also in Language Day, Dancing, Art, Band competitions and have produced Provincial and National level medals to the school. M. Amalsha Udari was placed 5th at the All Island Sinhala reading competition in 2011, N.A. Ravindu Pahasara took provincial 1st place in the Southern Province Competition for Social Studies and Surandima Dilshani obtained the provincial 1stplace in Tamil reading in 2012

This marvelous village school is a great influence to the province. With the mission of “create the best and the most effective school in the area while moulding the child empowered with knowledge, attitudes and skills on the way of fulfilling national educational aims and objectives”, it has directed thousands of students to prosperity and success in their career and social positions.
