Defending Sri Lanka Amateur golf champion Nadarajah Thangaraja kept up to his supporters’ expectations when he cruised through to the final of the 125th Sri Lanka Amateur Golf Championship with a 3 and 2 win over his teammate N. Ranga in the semi final played at the RCGC yesterday.

This was one of the two quarter final matches remaining to be played after it was called off due to bad weather on Friday with Thangaraja leading three up after completion of the 13th hole. The resumption saw Thangaraja being given a stiff challenge by Ranga but he brushed aside all opposition put in by his opponent to finish off the game at the completion in the 16th of the 19 hole contest.

In the other quarter final between giant killer P. Hemantha and Zen Dharmaratne saw the former who knocked out reigning Indian amateur champion Angad Cheema in a second round encounter going down to Dharmaratne who was also leading three up. Dharmaratne made short work winning the 14th and 15th hole to take the game with a 5 and 3 victory.

Earlier on Friday morning in the two quarter finals which were completed, man in form Mohammad Dulal of Bangladesh overcame Pakistan’s Mohammad Rehman 4 and 1 while M. Arumugam got the better of Sisira Kumara to qualify to the semi finals.
The semi final encounters which commenced after the quarter finals on Saturday morning saw Thangaraja and Dulal winning the matches with the identical score of 3 and 2 over Dharmaratne and Arumugam respectively.

Meanwhile the Ladies final which was concurrently between number one seed Gursimar Badwal of India and Sri Lanka’s Jackie Dias saw the favourite Badwal leading 2 and 1 after the completion of 18th hole in the first session of play. The much expected challenge from the Indian contingent of reigning India champion Angad Cheema and three time winner of the Sri Lanka Amateur championship Simarjeet Singh was dashed with the two being knocked out in the second round.

The 36 holes final showdown between Thangaraja and Dulal is scheduled to be begin in the morning at 8.00 a.m. today which will be played over two sessions with the second session scheduled to be played from 1.00 p.m. which will be followed by the award ceremony due to be held at 4.30 p.m.

Meanwhile the Ladies final between number one seed Gursimar Badwal of India and Sri Lanka’s Jackie Dias which was played concurrently saw the favourite Badwal after taking a 2 and 1 lead at the completion of the 18th hole at the end of the first session taking the title with a 4 and 3 win which she secured in the 33rd of the 36 hole encounter.

Men’s –  
Quarter finals – Mohammad Dulal (Ban) beat Mohammad Rehman (Pak) 2 and 1, M.  Arumugam beat Sisira Kumara 2 and 1; N. Thangaraja beat N. Ranga 3 and 2. Zen Dharmarathne beat P. Hemantha 3 and 2.
Semi Finals – N. Thangaraja (Sri Lanka) beat Zen Dharmaratne (Sri Lanka) 3 and 2. Mohammad Dulal (Bangladesh) beat M. Arumugam (Sri Lanka) 3 and 2.

Ladies -
Semi finals – Gursimar Badwal (India) beat Nanaki Chadha (India) 8 and 7; Jackie Dias (Sri Lanka) beat Niloo Jayathilake (Sri Lanka) 19th Hole.

Final – Gursimar Badwal (India) beat Jackie Dias 4 and 3.
