Be green, be healthy!

Yes, that is right. Being environmentally friendly and conscious of your surroundings can lead you to be a healthier person. The urban centers of Sri-Lanka are facing a similar situation with the rapid spread of a disease that has become increasingly, and surprisingly common, Dengue.

For many people garbage is a problem. It is things we do not need any longer and in turn it becomes a burden. Although may be a few days before the ‘garbage’ may have been a useful and valuable entity. This garbage, an unsightly, and smelly dump totally void of value is a burden. What is the solution? Well, we have all seen what happens or maybe been the culprit too; dump the garbage by the road, in an abandoned land, in a river the list goes on, just look around you when you travel. Individuals think this problem is now out of their hands, but in reality it is now the problem of the entire community and society at large. It is the irresponsible actions of a few people that endanger the rest. It is these garbage dumps that collect water and then become mosquito breeding sites. What can we do to solve the problem of garbage? Using the decomposable material such as kitchen waste to make compost, minimises the garbage and the compost can be used to fertilise plants. Recycling is a great way to minimise plastic, glass and paper. There are many collection centers for recyclable goods in and around Colombo. Not many people are aware of these recycling centers, so try to talk to your family and friends and get involved in recycling more garbage.

The main issues today is that people believe ‘it is not my problem’, but the earth is a shared resource and nobody can say that pollution, dumping of garbage does not affect them. The rapid expansion of urban areas and crowded living spaces means that the impacts of pollution are that much more. When garbage finds its way into water bodies, it blocks the flow of water. This becomes a problem during the rainy season when drainage pathways are blocked, causing floods that bring with it, again, diseases. So think, small actions have a real-life chain effect. It maybe just a small plastic bag but its consequences are long-lived and it could seriously harm the health of another individual. If everyone acts, as individuals, then a positive change can be influenced in society. So the next time you’re throwing your garbage away, make sure you are disposing it off properly. Nobody wants to be sick, we all want to lead healthy and happy lives, but for that we need to make an effort to keep our environment healthy, clean and happy.
